At Rafiki Safari Camp, we believe that following your dreams is always possible. With hard work, passion, and a “can do” attitude, anything can be achieved. We, Chris and Sandi, proved this when we left the corporate world in 2008 to begin a new life in Malawi’s hospitality industry.
How Rafiki Safari Camp Began
In 2016, African Parks took over the management of Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, bringing fresh energy to this remarkable wilderness. Inspired by their efforts, we purchased land on the banks of the Bua River, right beside the reserve. By November 2017, we had started building what is now Rafiki Safari Camp.
Living Our Dream
We believe you are never too old to work hard, chase inspiration, or live fully. Rafiki Safari Camp is the result of that belief. Every day, we live our dream here, and we are honoured to welcome guests who share our love of wild spaces and adventure.
The Camp and Its Surroundings
Our camp sits at the edge of Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, one of Malawi’s most unspoiled wilderness areas. The reserve is a paradise for birdwatchers and home to elephants, buffalo, hippos, antelope, and many iconic African species. African Parks’ conservation work has brought new life to this region, making it an incredible place to explore.
At Rafiki Safari Camp, you can stay in spacious safari units or enjoy full camping facilities. Evenings can be spent in the Boma, where guests gather under the stars, listening to the sounds of crickets, nightjars, and sometimes even elephants in the distance.
More Than a Safari
Our facilities cater for both catered and self-catered stays, making Rafiki Safari Camp ideal for couples, families, or groups. We are also close to Lake Malawi, where you can relax on sandy beaches, swim in clear waters, or visit traditional fishing villages. This location gives you the chance to combine the excitement of a safari with the calm of lakeside life.

“Rafiki” means friend in Swahili, and “Nkhotakota” comes from the Chichewa phrase Corner Corner. We invite you, friends, to join us in our special corner of Malawi — the Warm Heart of Africa — for an unforgettable safari experience.
